(Description #10: The last English class at high school)

My dream is to be an English teacher at high school.  I want to work at the high school where I went when I was a high school student.  The reason why my dream is to be an English teacher at high school is the lessons at the high school.  I liked the lessons at the high school very much especially lessons which were about grammar.  My English teacher who taught us English grammar was a person with an attractive personality, and his lesson was so excited every time.  Therefore, the English class was the last, I wasn’t able to accept the reality that the English class was the last.

(Book Theme)

As mentioned above, I took the English lessons when I was a first grade at an elementary school for the first time in my life. At that time, I was so excited because I had a powerful longing for the Japanese who can speak English fluently as a native speaker. However, I was also worried wether I could follow the English lessons because I had never written English or read English. When I became a junior high school student, I had an opportunity to like English, and I became to like English. The opportunity was that I was able to get a perfect score. In fact, the reason why I didn’t like English when I was a student at elementary school was that I wasn’t able to know how much my English abilities was improved and how much my English skills was acquired. When I became a high school student, I came to think that I wanted to be an English teacher. I will express these flow of my English learning experiences with using poem.

POETRY WRITING TO EXPRESS LOVE IN THAI AND IN ENGLISH : A SECOND LANGUAGE (L2) WRING PERSPECTIVE

Hello.  I’m Yukari Noguchi.  Today, I will talk about article, “POETRY WRITING TO EXPRESS LOVE IN THAI AND IN ENGLISH : A SECOND LANGUAGE (L2) WRING PERSPECTIVE”.

The theme of the study which is taken up in this paper is to reveal the relationship between love as a construct of emotion and writing in undergraduate Thai students with English.  The Thai students study English as a second foreign language, and they confronted with a difficulty when they translated Thai to English.

In fact, it is difficult for L2 learners to express their emotion with 2nd language.  L2 learners often feel frustrate, lost when they try to express their feelings because they don’t have any idea that which word they should use to convey their emotions in poetry, and they don’t have rich vocabulary of second language to express what they want to convey to readers.

Exploring earthquake experience: A study of second language learners’ ability to express and communicate deeply traumatic events in poetic form

This paper is about investigation of poetical description which is related to 2001 Great East Japan Earthquake in Tohoku, Japan on March 11, and the poetry was written by 78 Japanese second language writers. Generally speaking, when teachers teach English to students, they teach grammar in the language classroom, and the way of teaching is “form-based approach“(Kumaravadivelu, 2006). However, because of such a way of teaching, students can’t understand how language is practically used. Using poetry as a teaching material in the language classroom is effective for students because L2 writers’ abilities to express and to understand a certain events or emotion will be developed through learning poetry, and they can learn how language is practically used through learning poetry.

I like the poetry named “contact” which is about safety confirmation the best. The poetry contains not only English but also Japanese phrase, つながりません. Thanks to using plural languages, this poetry was impressive for me. Moreover, using Japanese phrase, つながりません allows this poetry to emphasize the tense situation that the writer was in at the time, and we, reader can imagine the situation that writer was in at the time easily. For people including me who are learning second language, I think that we, second language learner tend to try to use only second language by any means, in this case, English, but the writer of this poetry use Japanese phrase. I feel that the situation that the writer of this poetry use Japanese phrase purposely is the result that the writer learn poetry because learning poetry helps learners to understand how language is practically used. Throughout reading this poetry, I believed that learning poetry is so effective for second language learners, and I thought that I wanted to study poetry from now on.
